Victoria College students are celebrating awareness of World Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Day.
COPD is the third most prominent killer worldwide, said Victoria College student Adrian Sustaita.
“And it’s widely under diagnosed,” Sustaita, 35, said.
Students from the college’s nursing, respiratory care and physical therapy departments will give COPD demonstrations, host educational booths and COPD simple screenings and administer flu shots Wednesday at the Victoria Mall.
“The whole thing revolves around the 2013 COPD motto, ‘It’s never too late,'” Sustaita said. “We were trying to get everybody involved.”
Symptoms of COPD include shortness of breath and a persistent cough, Sustaita said.
The flu shots the students will offer will be covered by Medicare Part B, Sustaita said.
The worldwide event is organized annually by the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease.
