THE elderly and people with respiratory problems are being urged to seek early medical advice if they are suffering with a cough or cold this winter.
The NHS Bolton Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) have issued the warning ahead to help prevent A&E admissions in the busy winter period.
Asthma sufferers are said to be most at risk because cold weather and viral infections make their symptoms worse.
Dr Barry Silvert, clinical director for integrated commissioning at the CCG, said: “As a GP, I see many patients over the winter with coughs and colds that can be treated at home by getting lots of rest and drinking plenty of fluids.
“The local community pharmacy is also a good source of advice, with many medications available to buy over the counter.
“Many people with respiratory conditions know how to manage their condition and can handle a worsening of their symptoms themselves.
“However, I would encourage anyone who is concerned about their symptoms to make an appointment with their GP or practice nurse.”
Respiratory conditions are one of the key contributing factors to lower life expectancy in Bolton and are the third leading cause of death in the borough.
There are currently about 19,000 people being treated for asthma in Bolton and an average of five people die due to this condition every year.
Mortality from other types of respiratory diseases, such as bronchitis, emphysema, and other COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) is higher than the averages for both the North West and England as a whole.
