“It’s Not Too Late: World COPD Day” takes place on Wednesday at the Heart Lung Wellness Centre, 200 Churchill Drive, Suite 101, in Membertou. The event runs from 1:30-3:30 p.m.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a common lung disease that blocks the airways and makes breathing difficult. It’s usually caused by smoking or exposure to fumes or very dusty places.
Symptoms include coughing, bringing up phlegm or mucus and getting short of breath.
“Many people have COPD and don’t know it,” said Carol Ferguson, co-ordinator with the Heart Lung Wellness Centre, in a press release. “Some people just think their symptoms are part of aging and getting older, especially in the early stages of the disease.”
During the event, speakers will present on a variety of topics including different aspects of living with COPD, a review of spirometry, managing stress in COPD and pulmonary rehab in COPD.
“COPD is a chronic disease,” said Ferguson. “There’s no cure for it but there are things that can be done to help you feel better and slow the damage to your lungs. An early diagnosis can help prevent further lung damage. A simple, quick and painless breathing test called spirometry can help diagnose COPD. Treatments are also available to help people at all stages of the disease feel better. If you smoke, quitting smoking is one of the best ways to prevent COPD or stop it from progressing.”
Wednesday’s event is sponsored by the Heart Lung Wellness Centre, the Cape Breton Chest Clinic and the Heart & Lung Association.
Seating is limited. To register, telephone, 902-563-8567 or 902-563-8566.
