Ronald Edwin Ziehl, 77, of Cloquet, Minn., died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013, from complications of COPD. He was born on Sept. 23, 1934, in Cloquet to Edwin and Martha (Kubiatowicz) Ziehl.

Ron graduated from Barnum High School in 1954, a multi-sport athlete. He worked at Potlatch as an hourly and salaried pipefitter, retiring in 1995 to his lake home on Big Hanging Horn Lake in Barnum, Minn. Ron was a sportsman, carpenter and cabinetmaker. He loved sailing Lake Superior in weekly races and trans-Superior races with Glen Koski. Ron was a leader in Boy Scouting, receiving many awards. His troop was very accomplished and took many trips, like hiking in New Mexico, BWCA and Quetico, and his troop produced many Eagle Scouts. Ron worked diligently with the Cloquet Ski Club and Mike Marciniak, creating and developing the Pine Valley cross country trails.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Allan Ziehl, and his parents.

Ron is survived by his wife of 56 years, Barbara; daughters, Robbin of Cloquet and Donna of Oklahoma City, Okla.; sons, Terrence (Theresa) of Cody, Wyo., and James (Lori) of Barnum; grandchildren, Cassandra, Kimberly, Michael, Samantha, Sheri, Cody and Hank; great-grandsons, Colton and Royce; and sister-in-law, Lois Ziehl of Scanlon, Minn.

The family will receive friends and family from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, in Handevidt Funeral Home, 900 Washington Ave., Cloquet.
