Tanner has helped promote the creation of community gardens, which would help stock local food pantries. On display at the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Carrollton are some of the offerings from a local garden.
Tanner Health System will receive up to $2.6 million over the next three years through a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Tanner Health System was one of only six hospitals in the country to receive the grant, as well as the only health system in the Southeast.
The HHS’s Partnerships to Improve Community Health program is aimed at supporting public health efforts to reduce chronic disease, to promote healthier lifestyles, to reduce health disparities and to control health care spending.
The new grant will be used to continue many of Get Healthy, Live Well’s current evidence-based programs and strategies, while also implementing new ones. A key strategy of the new grant includes a strong focus on ensuring that prevention-focused health care and community prevention efforts are available, integrated and mutually reinforcing.
“As a health system, Tanner has become very good at treating disease,” said Loy Howard, president and CEO of Tanner Health System. “But to create a sustainable health care organization, we must also be very good at preventing disease. By changing behaviors that put our health at risk, we can reduce the number of people in our region who suffer from diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cancer and other diseases.”
The CDC will continue the award on an annual basis — at $859,412 per year — based on the availability of funds and satisfactory progress of the project, making it a potential total award amount of $2.6 million over three years.
Tanner also received a $1.2 million Community Transformation Grant from the CDC in September 2012.
