I was brought up in an era when the police were thought of as our friends – someone to go to in time of trouble. Today, there have been so many tragic deaths at the hands of the police, even caught on video – especially African-American males.

It’s hard to imagine little ones of theirs looking up to the police as a friend. They are probably terrified of them. Do their little ones look at the police and see friend and protector, or scary bad man? It’s hard to erase what they saw on TV.

So far, the police have not been held accountable for their actions, even with video evidence that would send anyone else to jail. Where is the justice? They say justice is blind, but perhaps the police departments across our country are in her back pocket getting a free pass. If the police do get a day in court, the whole incident is whitewashed, and that’s the end of that.

Time will tell whether our justice system really does see all men as created equal. Our nation should demand “no deadly force” against any “unarmed” man, woman or youth, regardless of race – whether by firearm or any act that could cause deadly harm.

Could they not hear “I can’t breathe”? Having chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), I understand his desperation to breathe. They took his breath and his life.
