The Northeast Regional Cancer Institute will host the 11th annual C.A.S.U.A.L. (Colon cancer Awareness Saves Unlimited Adult Lives) Day, a dress down day in memory of Helen Phillips to raise awareness about colorectal cancer. Individuals and businesses interested in participating in C.A.S.U.A.L. Day can do so by selecting an individual to serve as a team captain. Team captains will be in charge of ordering and distributing C.A.S.U.A.L. Day T-shirts for $15, and pins for $5. On March 27, participants are encouraged to dress C.A.S.U.A.L. and spread the word about colorectal cancer prevention and screening. All proceeds from C.A.S.U.A.L. Day support the ongoing efforts by the Northeast Regional Cancer Institute to raise colorectal cancer awareness and support colorectal cancer screenings for low income and un/underinsured individuals. Precision Talent and Modeling Competition open national finals will be held April 4-6 at Split Rock Lodge, Lake Harmony. There will be free classes, celebrity judges and special cash prizes. River of Life Fellowship “Raise Them Up Right” co-ed volleyball tournament sponsored by the River of Life Youth Group to raise money for the church’s gymnasium repairs will be held March 1 at River of Life Fellowship Church, 22 Outlet Road, Lehman. Format is round robin with two women on the court at all times. Players 16 and older are welcome. Cost is $100 per team. There will be awards and prizes and a food stand will be available all day. Queen of the Apostles Parish, Avoca, will hold a Night at the Races Saturday, Feb. 22 in the parish hall in the former St. Mary’s School, 742 Spring St., Avoca. Doors open at 6 p.m. Races begin at 7. Admission is $5 per person and includes food and beverages. Horse sponsorships are $10 each. The sponsor of the winning horse wins $50 and does not need to be present to win. The parish will have its monthly breakfast from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 23 in the parish hall. Cost is $6 per adult and $4 for children 12 and younger. The 2014 Duryea Borough garbage stickers were due Feb. 1. Stickers are available in the Duryea Borough building. The price of the stickers remains the same as last year. A $10 late charge will be charged after Feb. 7. Hours are 7 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Evening hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The price of the stickers are: one bag, $80; two bags, $135; three bags, $175, and four bags, $215. Residents are reminded that all additional bags of garbage must have the individual green garbage stickers to be picked up by the street department. Residents must have the 2014 placard displayed in their window to have their garbage collected beginning Feb. 10.
